Sunday, Oct. 12 1 2 3 F Jamestown 5 3 5 13 North Dakota 1 0 0 1 Grand Forks, ND- This weekend marks the home opener for the Hawks as well as the start of conference play with their first WCCHA matchup of the year taking place against the Jimmies of Jamestown. The Jimmies come into the matchup off the back of a sweep in Fargo to open their WCCHA season. North Dakota also comes into the weekend after earning a sweep in Fargo over Minnesota State Moorhead. The past weekend's games featured the highest scoring Nodak has seen in its history.
UND would open the scoring with Daniel Rafferty getting his second of the year on a tip from a Jack Atanasoff Shot. Jamestown would add two tallies to their total before Alex Clark would level the game 2 with 5 minutes to play in period 1. Jamestown would add 2 more before the end of the period. The second period proved to be all Jamestown again netting another pair. That would be the end of Riley Swanson's afternoon stopping 18 of the 24 he saw. Noah Sutlief comes off the bench to help put some spark back into NoDak. Freshman, Luca French would answer the call and get his second of the year on the powerplay with a wicked shot over the ear of Jamestown goaltender, Xavier Baker. Riley Tangen would get his first of the year going coast to coast off of a turnover to start the third. With a minute to play UND would pull Sutlief to get an extra attacker and even the game up. The efforts would prove fruitless as the Jimmies would put the dagger in by scoring an empty netter with 20 ticks of the clock to go. Jamestown spoils the home opener for the Hawks with a 7-4 win. Sutlief stops all 37 shots he faces in the last period and a half.
Sunday would see a much worse start. Off the back of his impressive game the previous day Sutlief started for the Hawks. Jamestown would score 3 straight before Cole Deraney put a little fight back into the game for North Dakota. That would prove to be the lone goal for UND as Jamestown would go on a rampage the rest of the game scoring 10 straight. Sutlief would end the day after giving up 5 goals on 13 shots. Noah Hacker would step in for the second time this year in place of Sutlief. He was able to stop the bleeding for a little while until the flood gates eventually opened. He would stop 33 of the 41 he'd face in the contest. North Dakota put themselves into penalty trouble on Sunday and ended up giving Jamestown 6 goals on the powerplay. A sour taste left for the Hawks as they felt like more could of been done but the Jimmies walk away with a 13-1 win and a sweep in hand for their two hour bus trip back to Jamestown that night.
North Dakota gets swept in their home opener and continues their losing streak to the Jimmies. They will have some time to regroup this week and prepare for another conference faceoff against Minnesota Crookston on the road. The Golden Eagles just earned a hard fought sweep over the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons. Next weekends matchup is shaping up to be interesting as NoDak has never beaten the Golden Eagles. A 6-6 tie back in 2021 is the best result yet.
Post-series Notes
Riley Tangen becomes the 7th Freshman to record his first ACHA goal on the season
Alexander Clark and Daniel Rafferty have both scored on back to back weekends for the first time in their careers
NoDak is now 1-11-0 all time against Jamestown with the sole win coming in 2023
UND drops to 4-4-0 on the season, remaining winless at home
North Dakota was also hurting in the Depth department with most of the top 2 lines missing and only dressing 18 on Sunday
Sunday would prove to be NoDak's worst performance on the penalty kill yet, only successfully killing 2 of their 8 penalties (25%)
