Saturday, Oct. 4 1 2 3 F North Dakota 1 4 3 8 Minn St. Moorhead 2 0 2 4 Fargo, ND- The Hawks continue the road trip to start the season heading down I-29 to faceoff against Minnesota State Moorhead in Fargo. Moorhead is a familar foe for NoDak with these two teams having met 8 times in just the past 3 years. The Dragon's open their season on home ice this weekend with UND looking to get some vengeance after falling to a very strong South Dakota State team just a week ago.
Friday afternoon is where the action begins for these two teams with a 1:30 pm puck drop. UND wouldn't take long to get going netting 3 quick before the game would see its first two minutes even tick off the clock. Cayden Alphin would add to the Hawks total just a few minutes later to bring the lead to 4. Moorhead would eventually muster up some fight by netting their own with just under 7 minutes to play in the first period. The onslaught of goals would continue for North Dakota as they would score 3 straight before MSUM takes advantage of a turnover on a NoDak power play to get a shortie. The remainder of the game would offer a similar back and forth story with UND ultimately tallying 14 before it was all said and done. Noah Hacker gets his first start and stops 38 of 43 to seal a 14-5 win on Friday.
Saturday's game would see a slower start. It would take the Dragon's nearly the whole period to finally break through and get the first of the game. MSUM would take a barrage of shots throughout the first two periods but would ultimately get two goals to show for it. UND would storm back at the end of the first period with Luke Brennan starting the rally. NoDak would get 5 straight before Moorhead was able to find an answer. Finally in the 3rd period the Dragon's were able to add to their tally before UND would continue to fill the back of the opposing net. With 4 seconds left Cayden Alphin would put the cherry on top with an empty net goal and send MSUM home with a bad taste in their mouths. Noah Sutlief back stops the Hawks to an 8-4 victory, stopping 66 of 70 along the way.
North Dakota picks up their second sweep on the young season and leaves Fargo in high spirits. They will take on Jamestown this upcoming weekend to open conference play on home ice. Moorhead will head to Crookston next weekend to faceoff with the Golden Eagles, a teams NoDak will see not to far into the distant future.
