Saturday, Sep. 27 1 2 3 F North Dakota 1 1 0 2 South Dakota State 4 4 2 10 Brookings, SD- North Dakota continues the season with their second road trip of the year heading down to Brookings to face off with South Dakota State. This is the second meeting for the two teams since SDSU revived their club hockey team just over a year ago. UND started the season off on a high note with the sweep they earned last weekend in Bemidji. The Jackrabbits come into this contest off the back of an unsuccessful road trip (0-3-0) to Utah to start their season.
Friday evening's game would start with a flurry of shots for the Hawks that would look to put them in front. SDSU's goaltending would stand strong and weather the storm until the tides would ultimately turn back into their favor. First period shots would end even for both teams with South Dakota State getting the scoring going with a goal towards the end of the period. The second period would offer a similar story to the first with SDSU adding another tally to the board before heading to the locker room. Period 3 would see the Jackrabbits open the scoring a bit more adding 3 more to their tally before the clock struck zeros on friday evening. A final score of 5-0 and SDSU picks up their first win of the young season. Riley Swanson stops 35 of the 40 shots for the Hawks makes some impressive saves along the way. South Dakota State silences UND's scoring to gain their first shutout of the year as well.
Saturday would give SDSU the opportunity to continue their dominance over UND. In hopes to silence the Jackrabbit scoring attack Isaiah Holie would bury one early off of a rebound from a Cole Deraney shot to give the Hawks the edge. SDSU would waist no time responding with four of their own before the end of the period. South Dakota state would continue to exploit North Dakota's defense in the second period by adding 3 more goals early into the second. Goaltender, Noah Sutlief's day would end midway into the period after a valiant effort fell short to stop the Jackrabbit scoring outbreak. Freshman, Noah Hacker steps into the game in relief of Sutlief while also making his collegiate debut. He would help quell the onslaught of goals and give Cole Deraney a chance to add to UND's tally before the end of the period. SDSU would wrap up saturday by putting two more in the back of the net before it was all said and done. An offensive onslaught for the Jackrabbits would see them pick up a 10-2 victory on home ice. Hacker does an outstanding job in his debut to stop 30 of 33 for North Dakota.
South Dakota State picks up their first wins and sweep of the season before hosting the Bulldogs of Duluth, Minnesota the following weekend. UND leaves South Dakota with a bad taste in their mouth before returning north to play MSU-Moorhead in Fargo, ND to continue their road heavy start to the schedule. UND has one more weekend to tune-up before conference play starts on October 11 in their own barn.
